Toddler activities at home

Ideas for ages one to three, back when my own two were still at the stage of tipping every basket over. Everything here is short to prepare, safe to sit beside, and easy to pack away when the interest runs out after eleven minutes.

A few things that make toddler play work

  • Stay within arm's reach. Small parts, rice and water all need an adult sitting alongside, not in the next room.
  • Offer less than you think. Three colours, two tools, one tray. A full art box overwhelms a two-year-old.
  • Let it end early. Eight focused minutes is a success at this age.
  • Set the boundary first. A tray, a towel or a shallow bin tells them where the play lives.
