Rainbow rice is the single best 15 minutes I have ever invested in my house. I dye a batch once, and it entertains both of my children on and off for months.

My toddler pours, buries and digs. My older one builds whole worlds in it: roads, farms, treasure hunts with hidden pom-poms. They play side by side at completely different levels, which almost never happens with anything else.

Yes, rice ends up on the floor. I keep an old sheet under the bin and a small dustpan next to it, and I made peace with it a long time ago.

What you'll need

  • 2 cups uncooked rice
  • White vinegar
  • Food coloring in rainbow shades
  • Large shallow tray or bin
  • Scoops, cups, and small bowls
  • Optional: hidden toys or pom-poms

How to make it

  1. 1

    Divide rice into zip-top bags, one for each color.

  2. 2

    Add a splash of vinegar and several drops of food coloring to each bag.

  3. 3

    Seal and shake until the rice is evenly coated.

  4. 4

    Spread the rice on a tray to dry for an hour or overnight.

  5. 5

    Pour the dried colors into a bin and add scoops and hidden treasures.

More rice, more play

Once the rainbow rice has been mixed and played with, it keeps for months in a jar. When you are ready for a new invitation, the same rice becomes the base for a whole set of dry filler bins.
