Rainbow rice is the single best 15 minutes I have ever invested in my house. I dye a batch once, and it entertains both of my children on and off for months.

My toddler pours, buries and digs. My older one builds whole worlds in it: roads, farms, treasure hunts with hidden pom-poms. They play side by side at completely different levels, which almost never happens with anything else.

Yes, rice ends up on the floor. I keep an old sheet under the bin and a small dustpan next to it, and I made peace with it a long time ago.

What you'll need

2 cups uncooked rice
White vinegar
Food coloring in rainbow shades
Large shallow tray or bin
Scoops, cups, and small bowls
Optional: hidden toys or pom-poms

How to make it

Divide rice into zip-top bags, one for each color.

Add a splash of vinegar and several drops of food coloring to each bag.

Seal and shake until the rice is evenly coated.

Spread the rice on a tray to dry for an hour or overnight.

Pour the dried colors into a bin and add scoops and hidden treasures.

Tip

Place a large sheet underneath for easy cleanup, and supervise very young children closely.
