Every autumn we come home with pockets full of leaves and nowhere to put them. They end up crumbling on the windowsill until I quietly bin them, feeling slightly guilty.
This year I printed simple black silhouettes and left them on the table with a basket. The leaves suddenly had a job, and my four-year-old sorted them for a full hour, holding each one up against the paper.
The best part is the last card: an empty dotted circle for a leaf we could not name. That one turns into a small research project every single time.
Print the two card sheets and cut them apart. Laminate them if you want them to live outside.
Go for a walk with the basket and collect whatever is on the ground — no picking from trees, that is our one rule.
Press the leaves flat between heavy books overnight, or press them for a few seconds under baking paper with a warm iron.
Lay the cards out on the table and invite your child to place each real leaf on the silhouette it matches.
Talk about the clues: the number of points, whether the edge is smooth or toothed, how the stem joins the leaf.
Use the magnifying glass on the veins. This is usually the moment they start asking how leaves drink.
Tape a leaf you cannot match onto the empty card and look it up together — then add its name in your own handwriting.

Press the leaves before you match — a curled leaf will not sit on the card and the whole thing gets frustrating. Fresh green leaves in spring work just as well as autumn ones, and the same cards come back out three seasons a year.
