This one started on a morning when nobody was in the mood for anything serious. We put on music, got a little silly, and started banging on whatever was nearby, a pot, a spoon, the table.

Then someone grabbed an empty bottle and poured in a handful of rice. One shake and the whole room lit up. Before I knew it we had beans and pasta out on the table, three bottles lined up, and a full family band marching around the living room.

Now it is our go to when the energy needs somewhere to go. Pick a song, grab a shaker, and follow the music wherever it leads.

What you'll need

  • Empty plastic bottles or jars with lids
  • Rice, beans, or small pasta
  • Decorative tape or stickers
  • Scarves or ribbons for dancing
  • Optional: a drum made from an upside-down pot

How to make it

  1. 1

Fill each container partway with a different noisy filler.

  2. 2

Seal the lid tightly with tape for safety.

  3. 3

Decorate the shakers with tape and stickers.

  4. 4

Clear a parade path around the room.

  5. 5

March, dance, and shake to a favorite song.

Keep the music going

After the shaker parade has marched through the house, the same instruments can lead a whole animal parade with songs and moves.

Music, movement and a lot of stomping.

Tip

Play a stop-and-go game to practice listening and self-regulation. For more advanced kids, try listening for when the music is slow and when it is fast, then walk slowly or run to match.
