Safari Animal Silhouette Matching Basket

A quiet-morning matching basket that pairs realistic toy safari animals with printable silhouette cards — a Montessori-style visual matching invitation for little hands.

Ages 2-65 min prep

What you'll need

  • A small set of realistic safari toy animals — a lion, elephant, giraffe, gnu, gorilla, hippo, rhino, tiger, zebra, gazelle, cheetah, and crocodile work perfectly
  • The printable Safari Animal Silhouettes sheet (download below), printed on regular or lightly heavier white paper
  • Scissors for cutting the sheet into 12 individual cards
  • Optional: a laminating pouch or clear contact paper to make the cards last
  • A small woven basket or wooden tray to hold the toy animals and the stack of cards

How to make it

  1. 1

Download the printable Safari Animal Silhouettes PDF from the resources below and print one page on plain white paper (or 120–160 gsm cardstock for sturdier cards).

  2. 2

Cut along the light gray rounded rectangles to make 12 individual silhouette cards. If you'd like them to last, laminate each card or cover with clear contact paper before cutting.

  3. 3

The night before, tuck the stack of cards into a small basket alongside the safari toy animals so the invitation is ready when your child wakes up.

  4. 4

In the morning, invite your child to spread the toys out on the table or a soft mat, then place the stack of cards face down beside them.

  5. 5

Take turns flipping over one card at a time. Say the animal's name out loud, then invite your child to search for the matching toy and place the toy right on top of its silhouette card.

  6. 6

For younger children (2-3), start with just 4 or 5 cards and matching toys — add more as they get confident.

  7. 7

For older children (4-6), lay all 12 cards out at once and turn it into a speed match: how quickly can they line up every animal on its shadow?

  8. 8

When play is over, stack the cards back into the basket and return the toys — the whole basket is ready for tomorrow morning.

Tip

The toys we love in our house are the Schleich-style realistic safari figures — the more realistic the toy, the more satisfying the silhouette match feels. See the linked Amazon set below for the exact animals used in the printable.
