Rice and Dry Filler Sensory Bins

Six dry sensory bins we actually keep in the cupboard — dyed rice, pasta, pom-poms, seeds and sand — with the scoops, tools and treasures that make them last an hour.

Ages 2–710 min (rice dyed the night before) prep

The dry bin is the one I reach for on a morning when I need twenty quiet minutes and I have not planned anything.

Everything lives in one lidded box: a batch of dyed rice, a bag of dry pasta, a jar of pom-poms. I tip one filler into a deep tray, add two scoops and a small bowl, and hide a few treasures in the bottom.

What surprised me is how much of it is not sensory at all. My 5 year old sorts by colour and counts out loud. My 3 year old pours from cup to cup for a very long time and calls it cooking.

One filler, three tools, and a towel underneath. That is the whole formula, and these six posts are just different versions of it.

The baskets we love

What you'll need

  • One deep tray or shallow tub with a lid
  • A dry filler: white rice, dry pasta, dried lentils or clean play sand
  • Food colouring and a splash of vinegar or hand sanitiser (for dyeing rice and pasta)
  • Two or three scoops, spoons and small cups
  • Plastic tongs or child-safe tweezers
  • Small treasures: pom-poms, buttons, plastic animals or dinosaur figures
  • An old towel or a shower curtain to catch spills

How we use the drawer

  1. 1

Dye the filler the night before: rice or pasta in a zip bag with a few drops of colouring plus a teaspoon of vinegar, shake, then spread on a tray to dry overnight.

  2. 2

In the morning tip the filler into a deep tray and set it on an old towel on the floor or the table.

  3. 3

Add two or three tools and a small empty bowl — the empty bowl is what turns pouring into a game.

  4. 4

Bury a handful of treasures in the bottom and say nothing. Letting them be discovered is half the play.

  5. 5

When they are done, funnel the filler back into its lidded box. Ours has lasted months.

Tip

Under three, skip small dry fillers or stay within arm's reach — dry rice and lentils are a choking risk. A wide, shallow tray spills far less than a deep bucket, and a plain white tray makes the colours pop.
