Pom-Pom Sorting Mats Basket

My youngest was going through a phase of tipping things out and walking away. A friend told me to add tongs, and it genuinely changed the morning.

Something about picking a soft pom-pom up with wooden tongs makes it worth doing slowly. She sorted the whole bag by colour, then did it again.

It is the cheapest basket on this whole site, and the one that comes out most often when I need twenty minutes to make a phone call.

What you'll need

  • The printable sorting mats (download below) — colour circles, counting frames and pattern strips
  • A bag of craft pom-poms in mixed sizes and colours
  • A pair of child-sized wooden tongs or chunky tweezers
  • A shallow tray to keep everything from rolling onto the floor
  • A muffin tin or small bowls, if you would rather sort into containers than onto paper
  • Optional: laminating pouches so the mats survive being sat on

How to make it

    Print the mats and laminate them if you can — they get handled hard and they are worth keeping.

    Start with the colour page only. Too many mats at once and nothing gets finished.

  3. 3

    Tip the pom-poms into the middle of the tray and put the tongs on top. Say nothing and walk away for a minute.

  4. 4

    For toddlers, fingers are fine — the tongs come later, when pinching gets easy.

  5. 5

    When colour sorting is easy, bring out the counting frames: one pom-pom per square, counting aloud as they fill each row.

  6. 6

    The pattern strips are last: you start a red-yellow-red-yellow line and they continue it. Make a deliberate mistake sometimes and let them catch you.

    Pack it all back into a zip bag with the mats folded inside, so it is ready to hand over next time.

Tip

Buy pom-poms in mixed sizes — the tiny ones are genuinely hard with tongs and give older siblings something to work at. If your child is still mouthing small things, use the biggest pom-poms only and stay at the table with them.
