I keep a box of table salt in the craft drawer purely for this. It costs almost nothing and it makes my kids gasp every time.
You squeeze glue, you pour salt, you touch a wet brush to it, and the color runs along the line like a tiny river. My daughter calls it feeding the picture. She lines up her paint jars and works one color at a time, very seriously.
Draw simple lines the first time, hearts, spirals, a name. The magic is in watching the color travel, not in the drawing itself.
What you'll need
- Dark cardstock or black paper
- White school glue in a squeeze bottle
- Table salt
- Liquid watercolors or diluted food coloring
- Small paintbrushes and bowls
- A tray to catch loose salt
How to make it

Squeeze glue onto the paper in swirls, hearts, or letters.

Sprinkle salt generously over the wet glue and shake off the excess.

Dip a brush into watercolor and gently touch it to the salted lines.

Watch the color travel along the salt like magic.

Let the artwork dry flat overnight.

Try just one or two colors at a time to keep the effect soft and dreamy.
