Little Archaeologist Basket

What you'll need

• A shallow wooden or plastic tray (a baking dish works too)
• About 3 cups kinetic sand, fine play sand, or coarse table salt
• 6-10 small plastic figures — mini dinosaurs, animals, sea creatures, or tiny gems
• One soft-bristle paintbrush (a clean makeup brush or watercolor brush is perfect)
• A small wooden spoon or child-safe scoop
• A little bowl or muffin tin to sort the discoveries
• An old towel or tray liner to catch spills

How to make it

   The night before, spread the sand or salt evenly in the tray until it fills about two-thirds of the depth.

   While your child is asleep, gently press each small figure down into the sand at different depths — some barely covered, some fully buried.

   Smooth the surface over with your hand so nothing peeks out. It should look like a blank little desert.

   Set the brush, spoon, and sorting bowl next to the tray so everything is ready in the morning.

   Invite your child to become an archaeologist: explain that treasures are hidden under the sand and their job is to find them slowly, without pouring or dumping.

   Show them how to sweep the brush across the surface in gentle strokes until a shape starts to appear.

   Once a figure is spotted, use the small spoon to loosen the sand around it, then keep brushing until it lifts out cleanly.

   Place each discovered treasure in the sorting bowl and keep digging until every figure is found.

   When the dig is finished, sort the figures by type, color, or size — dinosaurs together, sea animals together — and talk about what each one might be.

    To reset: smooth the sand, rebury the figures, and the basket is ready for another morning.
