Candle Drip Painting

A grown-up drips wax, a child paints watercolor over it — the wax resists and hidden shapes appear.

Wax drip painting is the activity my kids beg for, and the one I stay right next to the entire time. Real flames, real supervision, and an adult holding every candle.

The reward is that the color is unlike anything else. Hot wax hits the paper and hardens into a glossy raised drop, and the layers build into something almost three dimensional.

We do it at the kitchen table after dark, all the lights off except the candles. It feels like an event.

The setup: one steady candle, wax crayons and paper on a lined tray

What you'll need

Thick watercolor paper
Two or three colored candles or plain white household candles
A metal baking tray to catch drips
A lighter or match (adult use only)
Liquid watercolors or well-diluted food coloring
Chunky paintbrushes and a cup of water

How to make it

Set the paper on the metal tray. Move any long hair or loose sleeves out of the way.

Adult only: light a candle and let it burn for a minute so the wax is fully melted.

Adult only: carefully tip the candle and drip wax across the paper in swirls, dots, and lines. Your child can call out where to drip next.

Blow out the candle and let the wax cool for a minute until it's hard.

Now hand over the paintbrushes. Invite your child to wash bright watercolor all over the paper.

Watch together as the paint slides right off the waxy lines — the drips stay white and secret shapes appear.

Let the painting dry flat, then peel off any thick wax blobs gently once it's cool.

Tip

Always the adult holds the candle. Frame this as a partnership: 'You choose the colors and I'll draw with fire.'
