Dough, Salt and Squishy Trays

For kids who want to press, roll and squeeze. Five low-mess squishy trays — playdough, salt-glue, wet felting, soap carving and cookie shapes — you can leave out all day.

Ages 2–710–20 min prep

This is my under-three category. Nothing here is small enough to swallow, nothing rolls under the sofa, and all of it survives being squeezed very hard by a 3 year old with strong opinions.

Homemade dough is the base of most of it. I make a double batch on a Sunday, split it into three colours, and it lives in the fridge in old yoghurt pots for a couple of weeks.

The rest are variations on the same feeling: salt poured onto glue, wool pressed under warm soapy water, a bar of soap softening under a lolly stick.

These are also the trays I can leave out. They get picked up, abandoned, and picked up again between other things, which is exactly what I want on a slow day at home.

What you'll need

  • Homemade playdough (flour, salt, oil, cream of tartar, water) in two or three colours
  • A small rolling pin and a few metal cookie cutters
  • A bowl of table salt and a bottle of white glue
  • A watercolour set and a soft brush
  • Wool roving in a few colours and a bar of soap
  • A wooden tray or a baking sheet to hold each setup

How we use the drawer

  1. 1

Make the dough ahead: 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 2 tbsp oil, 1 tbsp cream of tartar and 1.5 cups hot water, stirred and kneaded until smooth, then coloured.

  2. 2

Set one tray per idea — the tray is the boundary, and it is what keeps the mess to one square.

  3. 3

Put out fewer tools than you think: dough plus a rolling pin and two cutters beats a whole drawer of gadgets.

  4. 4

Leave the tray somewhere they can reach it on their own during the day.

  5. 5

Store dough in an airtight pot in the fridge; it keeps for two to three weeks.

Tip

Natural colours work beautifully in dough: turmeric for yellow, beetroot powder for pink, spirulina for green. And a squeeze of hand lotion into the dough makes it silky enough that adults want a piece too.
