Every guest brings a bear. A blanket on the grass, honey sandwiches, a bear hunt through the garden and a nap-friendly finish - the gentlest party you will ever host for three-year-olds.

This was my answer to a birthday for a three-year-old who found soft play overwhelming. No games with winners, no loud music, no queue for anything.
Asking every guest to bring their own bear did something lovely - they arrived already holding something familiar, and the shy ones had a friend from the second they walked in.
The bear hunt around the garden took twenty minutes and was the entire entertainment budget. Ten small bears hidden in flower pots and a basket each to collect them in.
Send it a week ahead with one instruction on it: bring your bear. It sets the whole tone before anybody arrives, and it means every guest walks in already holding something familiar.
Ask for a name too. Introducing every bear out loud as the guests arrive is genuinely the best five minutes of the party.
Two or three picnic blankets on the grass with cushions around the edges, and fabric bunting strung between two trees. That is the whole set.
Prop a few spare bears up on the blankets before anyone arrives so the picnic already looks like it has started, and put a small collecting basket at the edge of each blanket.
Sandwiches cut with a bear-shaped cutter on soft bread, honey sandwiches, strawberries and grapes. Everything goes into a square lined picnic basket so it can be carried out to the blanket in one trip.
A little jar of honey with a wooden dipper on the side, paper cups, and a honey-jar cake or plain cupcakes with a bear face piped on for the end.
Three-year-olds eat almost nothing at parties. Keep the menu tiny and put it out all at once rather than in courses.
Hide ten small bears around the garden before anyone arrives - in flower pots, in the grass, behind the watering can. Toddler eye level and lower, always: anything above a three-year-old's eye line simply does not exist.
Baskets out, everybody hunts, and everybody keeps one bear at the end so nobody counts whose pile is bigger.
Sit down on the blankets with the bears propped up at their own places and their own tiny plates. This is the quiet middle of the party and it is worth protecting.
Give each bear a spoonful of something on a saucer. The children will feed them very seriously.
One round of Going On A Bear Hunt as a group, sitting on the blanket, with all the actions - long grass, mud, snowstorm, cave.
Then cake. Do it in this order: the story settles them and the cake finishes the party.
A mini honey jar, a bear sticker sheet and a small wooden bear in a paper bag, handed out at the door as each family leaves with their own bear under one arm.
Keep three spare bears in a cupboard for the guest who forgets theirs. Somebody always does.
Keep it to ninety minutes and hold it in the morning, before the nap window closes. Hide the bears low - anything above a three-year-old's eye line simply does not exist. And have three spare bears in a cupboard for the guest who forgets.
