This was a winter birthday, which meant everything had to work indoors in a not very big living room. Space turned out to be the perfect answer: dark cloth, silver, and one big cardboard box.
The rocket took me two evenings and it was worth every minute. Children queued to sit inside it. It stayed in our hallway for a month afterwards.
Everything else was paper lanterns and star confetti, which cost almost nothing and made the room feel completely transformed.
Hang painted paper lanterns from the ceiling at different heights as planets — one with a card ring around it as Saturn is worth the extra five minutes. Silver streamers hanging between them read as stars falling.
Cover the table with a dark blue cloth and scatter silver star confetti across it. This is the highest-impact, lowest-effort decoration on this entire site.
Turn the main light off and use lamps. A dim room makes the whole thing feel like space instead of a living room with lanterns in it.
Stand a large cardboard box upright, tape a cone of card on top for the nose, and cut two big triangles for the fins. Paint the body white and the nose and fins red.
Cut a round porthole on one side, big enough to look through, and a door flap on the other so a child can climb inside.
Let the children add stickers and drawings to it during the party — it becomes their rocket rather than your decoration.
Run a countdown game: everyone crouches, counts down from ten together, and jumps up at zero. Repeat until the adults are tired.
Star-cut sandwiches, a big bowl of popcorn labelled 'asteroid popcorn', and chocolate cake pops rolled in crushed biscuit as moon rocks on sticks.
Little printed table cards do a lot here: naming ordinary food turns it into part of the theme without any extra cooking.
Serve everything on the dark cloth with silver cups. Milk in the silver cups is 'rocket fuel' and disappears twice as fast.
Silver and navy bags with a mini torch, a pack of glow-in-the-dark stars and a small toy rocket in each.
The glow stars are the winner — parents message you the next morning about the ceiling.
Start the rocket a week before, not the night before — cardboard painting needs drying time. Supermarkets will usually give you a big box for free if you ask at the desk. Keep the room dim: it hides every imperfection and doubles the atmosphere.
