Spider Web Rescue Basket

A sneaky fine-motor rescue mission: tiny figures are trapped under a yarn spider web, and little hands must free them without touching a single thread.

What you'll need

A shallow basket, tray, or shallow cardboard box with low sides
5-8 small toy figures: animals, insects, or tiny people (about 3-5 cm tall)
White cotton yarn or kitchen twine, about 2-3 meters
Masking tape or washi tape to secure the yarn to the basket rim
A pair of child-safe tweezers, small tongs, or wooden clothespins
Optional: a magnifying glass for inspecting the 'web'
Optional: a small bowl or second basket to place rescued figures in

How to make it

Place the small figures inside the basket, spreading them out so none are touching the edges.

Cut several lengths of white yarn. Tape one end to the rim, stretch it across the opening, and tape the other end to the opposite side. Repeat in different directions until the top looks like a messy spider web with gaps of different sizes.

Make some threads tight and others a little loose, so the challenge varies across the basket.

Set the tweezers or tongs next to the basket and explain the mission: the toys are stuck in the web and need to be rescued without touching any yarn.

Invite your child to choose one figure and plan a route. Which gap is big enough? Which thread is too close?

Show them how to grip a figure with the tweezers and lift it slowly through a gap. If a thread moves, they have touched the web — gently place the figure back and try again.

As each figure is rescued, place it in the safe bowl or basket. Celebrate quietly so the 'spider' does not wake up.

Once all figures are free, let your child rebuild the web in a new pattern and start the rescue again.

Tip

Start with only a few yarn threads for age 3, then add more as their control improves. Use heavier figures at first — light ones are harder to lift steadily. If frustration rises, turn it into a team game where you hold the basket steady while they operate the tweezers. The no-touching rule is the whole game, so keep the mood playful rather than strict.
