Straw bales, gingham, a corn sensory box and toy animals everywhere. A gentle, slow party built for two and three year olds who are not ready for organised games.

For my son's second birthday I planned three games. We played none of them. Toddlers do not do games — they do stations, and they do them in their own order.
So the farm party became a set of small invitations spread around the garden: a corn box, a barn with animals, a jug of sunflowers, and a table of food they could reach.
It was the most relaxed party we have hosted, and the corn box alone held six toddlers for half an hour.
What you'll need
One or two straw bales from a garden centre or pet shop (they double as seating)
A red and white gingham tablecloth
A toy barn and a set of plastic farm animals
A large shallow crate or tub filled with dried corn kernels or dried beans, plus scoops and buckets
Sunflowers in a metal jug or watering can
Small milk bottles with striped paper straws
Kraft favour buckets, seed packets, small wooden spoons and a mini toy animal each
The decorations
Two straw bales, a gingham cloth and a jug of sunflowers is the entire look. Toddler parties do not need more, and anything hanging within reach will be pulled down.
Set the toy barn in the middle of the table with the animals walking around it — this doubles as a play station once the food is gone.
Keep everything low: a low table, low benches, and food they can take themselves without asking.
Straw bales, gingham, sunflowers and a barn on the table.
The corn box
Fill a shallow wooden crate with dried corn kernels — a sack from a pet or feed shop costs very little and pours beautifully.
Add scoops, small buckets, and half a dozen toy farm animals. That is the whole station and it will be the busiest thing at the party.
Set it on the grass, away from the food, and expect corn everywhere. Sweep it up at the end and keep it in the sack for next time.
For under-twos who still mouth everything, swap the corn for large dried pasta shapes or a tub of oats and stay close.
Dried corn, scoops, buckets and a few animals. The busiest station of the day.
The food
Everything in this list is finger food that a two year old can manage alone: carrot and cucumber sticks standing in little cups, cheese cubes, mini muffins, and a bucket of popcorn for the older siblings.
Small glass milk bottles with striped straws look wonderful on the gingham and turn plain milk into a treat.
Serve the cake early rather than late. At this age the party is over when it is over.
Veg sticks in cups, cheese cubes, mini muffins and milk in little bottles.
The favour buckets
Small kraft buckets with a packet of wildflower seeds, a little wooden spoon and one toy farm animal.
The seeds are the nicest part: the party carries on at home in a pot on a windowsill.
Seeds, a wooden spoon and one animal each.
Tip
Toddler parties should be short — ninety minutes is plenty. Set the stations up and then leave them alone; the play happens when adults stop directing. Keep one quiet corner with a blanket and a few books for the child who needs a break.
