Fuse beads arrived in our house as a gift and I was skeptical. Tiny beads, an iron, two children. It turned out to be one of the most peaceful activities we do.

The trick that changed everything for us was sorting the beads by color into a muffin tin first. That is an activity in itself, and it turns a chaotic pile into something my son can actually work with.

He places bead after bead, silent and focused, for longer than he does anything else. The ironing is my job, and handing back the finished, solid piece is the best part of my day.

What you'll need

  • Fuse beads (Hama or Perler style) in assorted colors
  • Peg board in a simple shape
  • Small bowls for sorting colors
  • Parchment or ironing paper
  • An iron (adult use only)
  • Optional: printable pattern cards

How to make it

    Sort beads into bowls by color to make choosing easier.

    Invite your child to place beads one by one onto the peg board.

  3. 3

    When the design is complete, cover it with parchment paper.

  4. 4

    Adult only: gently iron over the paper until the beads fuse together.

  5. 5

    Let the design cool, then peel it away from the board.

Tip

Start with a simple heart or flower shape — the placing is the meditative part.
