Flower & Leaf Pounding Prints
Fresh petals become natural paint when tapped with a wooden mallet onto cotton — pure garden magic.

The first time we tried flower pounding, I braced myself for disappointment. Instead we got real color, printed straight from the petals onto fabric, in about two seconds.
Kids get to hit things with a hammer, which is reason enough. But then they lift the paper and see the exact shape of the flower stained into the cloth, and the whole mood changes to something quieter.
We use the fabric squares as gift wrap and once sewed one into a little pillow for my mother.
What you'll need
- Fresh, colorful flower petals (pansies, roses, marigolds) and soft green leaves
- A square of undyed cotton fabric or a thick sheet of watercolor paper
- A small wooden mallet or a smooth kitchen meat tenderizer
- A sheet of parchment paper or wax paper
- A flat, hard surface like a wooden cutting board
- Painter's tape

How to make it

Go on a short walk together and gather petals and leaves. Pick things that are bright and not too woody.

Back at the table, tape the cotton fabric flat onto the cutting board so it can't slide.

Let your child arrange petals and leaves on the fabric in any design — a face, a rainbow, a scatter.

Lay the parchment paper gently over the top so nothing moves.

Show them how to hold the mallet with two hands and tap firmly and evenly all over the parchment. No swinging — just tap, tap, tap.

After a minute of tapping, peel back the parchment and lift the petals off. The color and shape will have transferred onto the fabric.

Let the print dry flat for an hour, then hang it up as art or sew it into a little pouch.
Tip
Softer petals give the brightest prints. Avoid thick petals like tulips — they bruise instead of printing.
