A basket of shakers and drums, a stack of animal cards, and a rule: play like the animal on the card. Loud for elephants, tiny for mice, then march through the whole house.

This came out of a wet morning and desperation, and it is now the thing I reach for whenever the energy in the house has nowhere to go.
The animal cards turn banging into listening. An elephant is slow and heavy, a mouse is quick and quiet, and a three-year-old can hear that difference long before they can explain it.
The parade at the end is what makes it. Round the kitchen, down the hall, once round the sofa, and everybody is somehow calm afterwards.
Lay every instrument out on the rug and let them try all of them before any rules appear.
Introduce the first card: elephant. Play slow, heavy and loud - stamp with it if you like.
Turn over mouse. Play as quietly as you possibly can. The quiet card is always the funniest one.
Alternate loud and quiet cards. This is the whole musical idea and they will get it in about four turns.
Add a fast bird card and a slow bear card, so you now have loud, quiet, fast and slow.
Play freeze: everyone plays until the music stops, then holds completely still. Repeat until someone falls over laughing.
Let them choose the card for you and play what they conduct - handing over control is what keeps this going.
Finish with the parade: everyone picks an instrument and marches a set route around the house, then packs the basket away.
Keep the quiet cards coming. If it is only loud animals this becomes twenty minutes of banging and then a headache. And put the basket somewhere they can reach on their own - half the value is them starting it without you.
