My older daughter turned 7 and suddenly everything was about jewelry. Polymer clay was the answer, and it turned into a whole afternoon of quiet work.
Rolling the beads is the hard part, and it is exactly the kind of fiddly work that older kids love. We poked the holes with a skewer, baked them while they had a snack, and strung them still slightly warm.
She wore the first necklace to school for a week and gave the second one to her teacher.
What you'll need
- Polymer clay (Fimo or Sculpey) in pastel colors
- A small rolling pin or smooth bottle
- A wooden skewer or toothpick
- Baking tray lined with parchment
- Elastic cord or waxed string
- Scissors
How to make it

Warm the clay in your hands until soft.

Roll small balls, discs, or tube shapes for beads.

Poke a hole through each bead with the skewer.

Adult only: bake according to the package instructions and let cool completely.

Thread the beads onto elastic and tie a secure knot.
Tip
Marble two colors together for pretty swirled beads.
