One small bag that turns a flight, a long drive or a restaurant wait into something they look forward to. Everything in it is made at home from things you already own.

We pack this bag the night before every trip, and it has saved more journeys than any screen. The rule in our house is that the bag only comes out when we are travelling, which is exactly why it still works.
Almost everything inside it is homemade, which means nothing is precious. If a card blows out of the car window at a petrol station, nobody cries.
Pack it once and it lives in the cupboard, ready. Refresh two items before each trip so there is always something new inside.
The classic busy bag piece: draw one picture across the sticks, number them, mix them up.

Give it to them to carry. A bag that is theirs to open is opened far more carefully than a bag handed out from the front seat.
The popsicle-stick puzzle is the classic for this bag: they draw one picture across the sticks, number them, and rebuild it again and again. It packs flat and costs nothing.
Story dice or story prompt cards fill any queue — one prompt, one story, everybody adds a line. Secret code cards work the same way and buy you a very quiet twenty minutes.
A shape hunt or a measure-it hunt turns the airport itself into the activity, which is by far the best trade you can make on a travel day.
Everything small goes into its own zip bag or tin, so one shake of the tote does not empty forty pieces into the footwell.
Laminate the cards if you have a laminator — they survive juice, hot cars and being sat on for a full week.
Leave one empty pocket for what they collect on the way: a boarding pass, a shell, a leaf, a receipt with a drawing on the back. That pocket is usually their favourite part by the end.
Refresh two items before every trip and put the bag away the moment you get home. A busy bag that lives in the toy box stops working within a week.
