I bought a coconut on a whim because my son asked what was inside it, and I did not have a good answer. Opening it together turned into the most memorable morning of that whole month.

There is real anticipation in it: the shaking to hear the water, the hunt for the three soft eyes, the hammering, the moment the water actually pours out and everyone shrieks. Nothing on a screen competes with that.

And then it keeps going. The empty shells became bowls in our garden mud kitchen and they are still out there, half a year later, full of petals and stones.

What you'll need

  • One whole brown coconut
  • A metal skewer or a clean screwdriver, and a small hammer (grown-up job)
  • A glass and a straw for the coconut water
  • A butter knife or a sturdy spoon for prising out the flesh
  • A wooden board and a tea towel
  • Optional for later: a small grater, soil, petals, and stones for the mud kitchen

How to make it

    Before anything, let your child hold and shake the coconut next to their ear. Ask what they hear and what they think is inside.

    Find the three dark 'eyes' at one end. One of them is always softer — press each with the skewer to find it.

  3. 3

    Grown-up job: push the skewer through the soft eye and twist to open a hole, then a second hole so the water pours instead of glugging.

    Tip the water into a glass and strain it if you like. Everyone gets a sip — it usually splits the room and that is part of the fun.

    Wrap the coconut in a tea towel, lay it on a board outside, and tap firmly around its equator with the hammer, turning as you go. It splits cleanly along that line.

    Prise the white flesh out with a butter knife. Serve as it is, or grate a little into a bowl and taste it next to shop-bought desiccated coconut.

    Rinse the two empty shells and hand them over to the garden: they become bowls, boats, digger scoops, or fairy baths.

Tip

Do the hammering outside on grass or paving, with the coconut wrapped in a tea towel so nothing flies. Tapping in a circle around the middle works far better than hitting hard in one place. Fresh coconut goes off quickly — keep leftovers in the fridge and use within two days.
