Capes, masks, a comic book photo corner and a magician whose superpower is magic — a superhero party where every child gets sworn in and leaves in costume.

My son wanted a superhero party and I said yes before I thought about what that meant, which is roughly how all my parties start.
What saved me was one decision: the children do not arrive at a party, they arrive at a training academy. Every station is a mission, and at the end they are sworn in as heroes.
The capes are the whole party. Make them first and everything else can be simple.
Yellow and black caution tape across the doorway with a sign saying Training Academy, comic speech bubbles cut from card and taped on the walls, a city skyline cut from black paper along the bottom of one wall, and red, blue and yellow balloons in clusters.
Simple and loud. The whole wall takes one evening with a black roll of paper and a pair of scissors.
Power pellets in bowls, hero fuel juice in bottles with a lightning bolt label, sandwiches cut with a star cutter, red and blue fruit skewers, cheese and cucumber shields on round crackers, energy popcorn with a drizzle of red and blue candy melts, and a cake with a small fabric cape draped over it.
The labels are what turn ordinary supermarket food into academy rations.
For the fastest version, cut felt capes in advance and let each child stick their initial on with velcro backed letters. For the bigger version, cut lycra or jersey capes and put out fabric markers plus stick on patches so each child designs their own emblem.
Write their hero name on the collar. The capes are the whole party, so make these first and everything else can be simple.
Blank masks, paints, glitter glue and gems. Let them dry on a line with clothes pegs while the games happen, which also becomes a decoration on its own.
Younger children get pre punched elastic already attached.
Hang the comic backdrop, add a box of props such as glasses, capes and speech bubble signs on sticks, and take one photo of every child.
Print them later and send with the thank you message. Parents love this one more than the children do.
Chalk or tape a course across the floor or garden: a laser maze of yarn strung between chairs to crawl through, a wall of cardboard boxes to smash through, and a run to the finish.
Time each hero and cheer. They will ask to run it again immediately.
Stack cardboard box buildings and let the heroes knock them down with soft balls from behind a line. Rebuild between rounds so everyone gets many turns.
Grey paint and yellow paper windows are enough to make a box look like a skyscraper.
Dance to music and freeze when it stops, because heroes must control their power. Simple and always works with a mixed age group.
If you want thirty quiet minutes in the middle of the party, book a magician and introduce him as the hero whose superpower is magic. Or run the smoke bubble machine and let them chase the smoke filled bubbles across the garden, which costs nothing after the first time you buy it.

At the end, line up all the heroes in their capes and masks, read a short hero oath out loud together, and hand each of them a badge. This is the moment for the group photo.
The favor bag is a small drawstring bag with the mask they decorated, a hero badge or sticker sheet, a comic book or activity pad, a bouncy ball, a lightning bolt tattoo and a small bag of power pellets. The cape goes home on their shoulders, not in the bag.
Felt capes with velcro are the fastest and work from about age 2. Lycra capes with fabric markers are more fun for ages 5 and up because they can actually design something. Write every child's name on their cape collar with a fabric marker before they go home or you will end up with six unclaimed capes.
Bubbles filled with fog that burst into little clouds of smoke. At a superhero party it is the smoke screen the heroes have to run through, and it is the ten minutes they talk about afterwards.
