I resisted an art party for years because of the mess. Then I moved the whole thing outside and realised the mess was the entire point — and the hose sorts it out afterwards.
The big shared canvas was the surprise. Instead of everyone doing their own small picture, they painted one enormous thing together, and it was the calmest forty minutes of the afternoon.
We cut it into squares at the end so every child took home a piece of the same painting.
Hang lengths of crepe paper streamer in rainbow order along a fence or between two trees. It takes fifteen minutes and it is the photo backdrop for the whole party.
Cover the table in kraft paper and let the children decorate it with paint splatters as they arrive — an activity and a decoration at the same time.
Line up the paint jars in rainbow order on the table. It looks beautiful and it quietly teaches colour order.
Tape a big sheet of paper to a fence at child height. A vertical surface is much better than a table — every child can reach it and nobody is stuck at a corner.
Set the paints on a small table beside it with one brush each, plus sponges and a roller for variety.
Give one loose theme, like 'a garden' or 'the sea', and then step away. The painting takes over on its own.
At the end, take a photo of the finished canvas, let it dry, then cut it into squares so everyone goes home with a piece.
Rainbow fruit skewers do more decorating than any bunting: strawberry, melon, pineapple, kiwi, blueberry, grape, threaded in order.
Add rainbow cupcakes, a bowl of colourful popcorn, and jugs of pink lemonade.
Serve the food away from the paint end of the garden. This is the one rule that saves the afternoon.
Clear boxes tied with a ribbon, each holding a packet of crayons, a mini sketchbook and a sheet of stickers.
Add the dried square of the shared canvas on the way out — it is the favour they will actually keep.
Buy washable poster paint, not acrylic — the difference on clothes and fences is enormous. Have a bucket of soapy water and a stack of old towels at the edge of the painting station, and warn parents in the invitation that children will come home colourful.
