Keyboard Instruments Basket

A tiny toy piano, a melodica, and a mini keyboard invite little fingers to discover melody one key at a time.

Ages 3-65 min prep

What you'll need

  • A small toy piano or mini electronic keyboard
  • A melodica if you have one
  • Small colored dot stickers
  • A simple song card (three notes is enough)
  • Optional: a small stool at the right height

How to make it

  1. 1

Place the keyboard on a low table and set the stool in front.

  2. 2

Stick colored dots on three or four keys — for example, red-yellow-blue.

  3. 3

On the song card, write the same colored dots in the order of a tune (like 'Twinkle Twinkle': red-red-yellow-yellow-blue-blue-yellow).

  4. 4

Show your child how to press the keys in the color order to hear a real song.

  5. 5

Let them invent their own color patterns and 'read' the music they wrote.

  6. 6

For the melodica, breathe into the tube while pressing one key at a time.

Tip

Never say a wrong key. Every note becomes part of the composition when you smile and nod.
